Akai MPC 1000 Sounds, Tutorials & Resources

The Akai MPC 1000 is the most popular Akai MPC on the market today - it is feature-packed and relatively low cost, so is a popular choice for producers looking to start producing beats on dedicated hardware. The operating system is far more advanced than the older generation MPC (e.g. MPC2000XL) and features many great improvements.

MPC 1000 Samples & Sounds Information

The MPC 1000 uses standard 16 bit PCM wav files as its  native sample format, but also reads the old MPC SND format, as found on Akai samplers such as the MPC3000 and MPC2000XL.  It also reads older MPC program files, although as the operating system features many new features and an updated structure, only basic parameters are transferred over, such as pad assignment, tuning and decay settings.

We've put together a handful of free MPC 1000 drum samples for you to download. Just extract using something like Winzip and transfer over to your MPC 1000. If you want some more free MPC 1000 samples, subscribe to the MPC-Samples.com newsletter and you'll get instant access to a varied collection of drum and percussion sounds, plus a detailed ebook explaining how to set up a home studio.

Akai MPC 1000 Tutorials & MPC 1000 Manual

The MPC 1000 comes with an official MPC 1000 technical manual which explains the fundamental functions within the MPC 1000. It's nothing too exciting, but it does give you a quick overview of what all the buttons do.

Unfortunately, the MPC 1000 manual doesn't really show you how to use the features to actually make beats! There's no 'real world' examples; for example the manual shows you how to access the slice function, but that's it - it doesn't explain what cool tricks you can do with it and how you can incorporate them into your music.

To help new MPC 1000 users get to grips with their MPC 1000, I wrote an ebook entirely dedicated to the MPC 1000 tutorials . The book features 51 tutorials in total and shows you lots of cool tricks like building drum kits, creating your own breaks, advanced sequencing techniques, sample manipulation and much more. You can read a complete example tutorial from the book here on this site:

If you liked that tutorial, you can buy the entire book from MPC-Samples.com . You can get more information from the URL below, including further free tutorials (all about chopping samples), plus a detailed breakdown of the other MPC 1000 tutorials within the book.

Akai MPC 1000 Operating Systems

The official Akai MPC 1000 operating system is currently in its second major revision and is a significant improvement over version 1. There's still a few bugs but it's still pretty solid. You can download the latest Akai MPC 1000 operating system here   (you'll need to complete a form to get it).

There's also a third party MPC 1000 operating system available, made by an ex-Akai developer only know as 'JJ'. There are three versions of this JJ OS available; a free version which has similar features to the Akai OS, JJ OS version 1 which basically gives the MPC 1000 a similar OS to the MPC 2500, and JJ OS version 2 which brings in a load of new features (although at the expense of dropping some other features).

Should you get the JJ OS(s)? Well, they don't cost much (version 1 is $30, version 2 is $40, but you have to buy version 1 to get version 2!), and you can easily switch between the JJ OSs and the Akai version, so unless you are really broke, why not go for it? I would point out that the JJ Os is hardly a bug-free zone, but at least it is updated quite regularly.
